Glamorous coastal village, home of Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Del Mar is a beachfront community 20 miles north of San Diego. It combines a great climate and beautiful setting with the class and glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Del Mar’s development began in the late-1880s, when Colonel Jacob Taylor constructed its first resort. Taylor’s resort unfortunately burned down soon after, but Del Mar rose to prominence in the 1930’s when the Del Mar Fairgrounds were chosen to host the San Diego County Fair. Hollywood stars flocked to visit this enchanting seaside village, where the County Fair remains a major annual attraction..
Famed for its grand resorts, Del Mar real estate is just as luxurious as the location would suggest. From Tudor-style country estates to majestic oceanfront masterpieces and charming Del Mar beach houses, each of Del Mar’s properties is unique and immensely desirable.
This affluent and exclusive community is best known as the site of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is the home to the Del Mar Racetrack. Many residents use their Del Mar beach house as a vacation home for part of the year, renting it to horse-racing enthusiasts and sunseekers the rest of the time. Del Mar real estate is California beachfront living at its most glamorous and refined.
Del Mar Village is Del Mar’s main shopping area. Charming boutiques and other locally run businesses line its streets. Del Mar real estate’s many beautiful resorts offer fine dining establishments, such as the AAA Five Diamond- and Mobil Five Star-rated Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, where chef William Bradley makes masterful use of classic French culinary techniques and locally sourced ingredients to create unforgettable meals. Jake’s and the Poseidon both offer delicious fresh seafood with sweeping ocean views.
The Del Mar Fairgrounds are at the center of life here, with a famous racetrack, horse shows, and other seasonal events. The San Diego County Fair has been its biggest attraction since it was first held here in the ‘30s, and its popularity continues to grow. More than one million visitors typically visit the County Fair, with a record of more than 1.6 million visiting in 2016. Originally a purely agricultural fair, the County Fair now typically offers more than 4,000 attractions and close to 2,000 live performances. Other popular events at the Fairgrounds include The Del Mar Antiques Show. The facilities at Del Mar’s many first-class resorts include outstanding spa treatments at L’Auberge Hotel and a magnificent Tom Fazio-designed golf course at The Fairmont Grand.
